Salk Institute for Biological Studies
Inspiration & Escape
2:00pm - 5:00pm
Take an architectural tour of one of Louis I. Kahn’s most successful design projects, conceived in collaboration with Dr. Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine. When Salk told Kahn to “create a facility worth of a visit by Pablo Picasso,” Kahn took the challenge seriously. Using concrete, teak, glass, and steel, he created two mirror-image rectangular buildings flanking a travertine marble courtyard, ingeniously sited on La Jolla’s coastal bluffs. The complex fulfills Salk’s vision of open, unobstructed lab spaces set in a dramatic, inspiring location on the sea. Bring your camera!
