general session
Ignoring Boundaries
Inspiration & Escape
9:00am - 12:00pm
with Brian Collins (moderator), Craig Hanna, Matthias Hank Haeusler, Eric Karjaluoto, Eric LaBrecque, Karem Perez, and Amy Cotteleer

Now, perhaps more so than ever in our recent past, it’s time to ignore boundaries, break down barriers, and innovate our ways of thinking about design, culture, and the planet. Our general session speakers will open your eyes to new ways of thinking and doing design. This is what you come to the conference to see!

A writer, filmmaker, and storyteller with over 20 years of expertise in creating compelling experiences and environments, Craig Hanna serves as the creative conscience on every project for his firm Thinkwell, directing the creative development of each from inception through opening day. His experience in master planning and attraction development spans a variety of world-class projects.

Author of two books on dynamic environments, Matthias Hank Haeusler curated the recent exhibition on that topic at the 2008 Urban Screens conference in Berlin. As part of the transdisciplinary Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, he focuses his research on the transition of architecture to a communications medium.

Social media represent a broad change in how people communicate with one another—exciting for business as it presents new channels for reaching consumers. Eric Karjaluoto, who runs SmashLAB, will introduce early adopters who have encountered successes and failures in developing strategies incorporating this new paradigm.

Eric LaBrecque of Applied Storytelling will give us the backstory on the groundbreaking work done to reposition the city of Detroit for the 21st century. The resulting “D-brand” has been embraced by over 200 local entities. An associated new mapping system aims to heal years of racial and socioeconomic divide.

Along with Gensler’s Gail Brackett (brand strategist) and Russell Banks (creative director), Karem Perez, strategic marketing director of Motorola, will discuss the strategic positioning behind the successful M•Lab interactive role-play project.

What exactly is a branded environment? Can something as lasting as a brand exist for just a moment in time? What are the strategies behind the pop-up store phenomenon? Amy Cotteleer, president of A Squared Group, an award-winning marketing agency, will address the idea of brand as a temporary event.

What does the federal stimulus package mean for EGD work? How are federal and state contracts developed? What trends are we seeing in design projects because of government spending? How do cities and large institutions use federal and state money as part of their development planning? What strategies can large and small firms develop to procure these projects?

Panelists include Willie H. Davis, Davis Executive Associates; James P. Cramer, The Greenway Group/DesignIntelligence; Sachin Kalbag, San Diego Center City Development Corporation; Cheri Devlin, EDAW; Joseph Labozan, Labozan Associates; and Michael Reed, Mayer/Reed.

So many wonderful places in San Diego…so little time left. Will we gather at the waterfront? On one of the ships in the harbor? At the zoo or one of San Diego’s 100+ museums? We’re not telling yet. But this party will definitely be remembered as one of our great closing events!  Come ready for…anything!
